The History of Ostoros The village of Ostoros is located in the middle eastern part of Heves County, 6 kilometres South of Eger tucked between the hills. This beautiful village can be reached not just from Eger, but the Road M3 (Borsod county, Mezőkövesd). The village got its name from the water of Ostoros which was called "Istoros" by Anonymus. In 1330 it was first written in the form of "Ostoros". In 1367 Louis the Great released the tax from the serfs for 3 years. In 1446 they planted grapes in the boarder of Ostoros. In the 15-16th century it was the possession of the abbacy. During the battle of Eger, in 1552 the village was completely burnt down by the Turks. During the Turkish occupation it became the part of the Szarvaskő Castle. It didn’t become populated until the end of the 17th century. In 1700 Ostoros finally became populated. From the first map of Ostoros (made in the 18th century) it can be established that the heart of the village was Két sor. (the current Széchenyi Street). In the 19th century Egy sor was created (the present Honvéd Street: Alvég - Felvég). North of the village is Templom sor which was built at the end of the century. In 1925 an earthquake destroyed 95% of the village. The reconstruction began with the northwestern part of the village named Telep - Újtelep and it is still under construction. In the beginning of the 20th century there were numerous caves in which the people dwelled, even up until the 1940s. They established the village on both sides of the Ostoros Creek. Ostoros has a reservoir and a 154 F hotspring. It has natural and man-made citywalls in which can be found many wine-cellars. Besides the beauty of the village one of our tourist spectacles is our Roman Catholic Church and the "Csúnyamunka" (ugly work) what is a waspstone building from the Turkish time. According to tradition it was like a beehive connected to the Eger Castle. On the way from Eger to Ostoros you can have a glance on your left side at the Ostoros Lake that gives a good opportunity to spend your freetime. Our excellent wine stored in cool cellars and the hospitality of the hosts attract all the tourists. There’s an approximate population of 2300 people.
