Demjén is a village situated at the foot of the Bükk Hills in the Eger-Bükkalja region, 10km southwest of Eger, a picturesque town of the area. Straddling the stream Laskó, the village is only 12km from the motorway M3. The nearest railway station is Füzesabony along the Budapest-Miskolc railway line. A bus line connects the village to Eger. Finds from the neolithic age and open-end arrowheads were unearthed in the outskirts of Demjén. In the woods, or more particularly in an area called Pincevölgy (Cellar Valley), there is a cave carved into tuff and tradition has it that it used to be a hermit`s cave. Called Deménd in the early times, the village was owned by the Bishop of Eger and then by the archdiocese until 1804. The Baroque style catholic church still standing today was built in 1779. There are several residential houses that reflect the best traditions of folk architecture. A knitting association, a senior citizens club and the `Join Hands for Demjén` Foundation preserve traditions in the village. Starting in 1712 and hence looking back to a long history, vine-growing still provides a living for many families today. Geothermal water gushes to the surface from the depth of the earth in a beautiful environment between Demjén and Egerszalók, where there are two open-air pools of approx. 6m diameter, in addition to some `natural baths`.
